Pigs are are amazing creatures - intelligent, loving, emotionally complex, each one unique from the other. Also large, loud and somewhat destructive. The sad truth is that most of our rescues come from uneducated owners surrendering their pets. This problem is rampant. An estimated 90% of all pet pigs are surrendered or rehomed before their second birthday. It’s worth the time investment to learn more about mini pigs and determine BEFORE you bring one home, whether a pet pig is right for you, and why ADOPTION is the ONLY option you should consider when adding a pig to your family.
We encourage you to come visit our rescue in Wills Point, Texas. In this setting, surrounded by almost 300 mini pigs, you will get an eye-opening look at the diversity of mini pig sizes, shapes, colors and personalities, as well as a deeper understanding of life with a pig. A 90-minute education session with our founder, Melanie Moreau, will ensure you know what you’re getting into, with hands on demonstrations. An adoptive family’s willingness to make the journey to the rescue and invest their time in learning helps to ensure their future success as a pig parent, or make the decision to postpone or even forgo pig adoption. But make no mistake: pigs are not dogs nor are they cats. They’re pigs.
We’ve put together some FAQs to help you get started in making this important decision, before you jump into a 10-15 year commitment. Don't worry, there will be hundreds of piggies to choose from when you're ready!
Only 10 percent of our pigs will ever be adopted - in part because we’re highly selective with potential adopters. Why? All of our rescues have suffered the emotional trauma of being rehomed at least once; many have suffered far greater physical or emotional injury. When they come to us, we promise them an amazing life; our process and requirements test whether you too can deliver on the promise we made.
We have a list of requirements that must be met, a comprehensive written application, and we require a virtual or live home visit. If you qualify as one of our lucky adopters, you can be sure you’ll have the right pig for you and our team - a family of pig experts - backing you up and offering advice along the way.
You can read more about our adoption process here as you consider your next steps, and other information is available on our Resources page. Our adoption fee is $175.
Remember that mini pigs::
~Can live 15-20 years!
~Continue to grow for five years!
~Range from 75-150 pounds as adult pigs! That said, there is NO guarantee of size or weight. (Breeders who say otherwise are misleading you in pursuit of a quick buck.)
~Require specialized vets.
~Easily become obese if lacking proper diet and exercise.
~Root and dig, leaving holes in your yard (or floors or walls or…)
~Require hoof care, eye/ear care, deworming and vet care throughout their lives.
~Are herd animals and typically are happier in pairs or more.
~Are loving and emotional. You haven’t really known love until you’ve been loved by a pig!
Wonder what it’s like to adopt and live with a pig? You've come to the right place! This page tells, in bite-size increments, the bold adventures of Baron. Here you can travel with him on his path from rescue, to a new home, and on to the many adventures he is having there! And hopefully learn a few things about the ups, and downs, of being a pig mom or dad.
